Background of the
Mulkey Scholarship Fund

John and Nancy Mulkey were active in every possible facet of building Hosanna Lutheran Church, Houston, Texas into what it is today.

John, with his real estate background, helped locate the property where Hosanna now stands. He served on the church council and quietly worked to ensure financial goals were met. Nancy lead Altar Guild, organized cleaning crews and much more. To both of them Sunday school teachersthere wasn’t an area of Hosanna untouched by the Mulkey Family. There isn’t a room at Hosanna that we can walk into and not see and feel both of them.

Many years ago they made a “promise” to their Sunday School class, a promise to pay for any student to attend and graduate from Seminary. A full ride.

They had one taker…Mark Jaramillo, or should we say Rev. Mark Jaramillo. John arranged to pay for the majority of the education himself and also asked his employer Shell Oil and Lutheran Brotherhood (now Thrivent Financial) for matching funds to complete his pledge.

He was so very proud to see Mark‘s graduation announcement and his ordination as a pastor.

But that was just the start. John and Nancy also pledged a trust to be arranged in the event of a tragedy. That day came too soon when Nancy fell ill and succumbed to a brain aneurism in January 1993. That trust and John’s personal financial contributions up to his passing in December 2005, along with generous contributions from other Hosanna members to the Endowment, make the scholarships possible today.
